About Kekfesto Cotton

Kekfesto Cotton provides a vast range of hand-printed blue dyed fabrics imported from Hungary.

These 100% cotton fabrics are perfect for patchwork and quilting.

All of these fabrics are hand-dyed in small quantities. This means that most patterns are always available or can be re-ordered.

Because the fabrics are hand-dyed, the blue colour can vary slightly, which can add to the charm of the finished quilt or other creation. If you want to ensure a consistent blue colour, be careful to order fabrics with the same code letters. For example: "DB" or "SZ". The code letters identify the individual source of the fabric.

There are quite literally hundreds of patterns and I am always trying to add new fabrics to my collection - so come back often!

I hope you enjoy browsing through the fabric swatches. If you have any questions at all, please email me.

A bit of background

My first visit to Hungary was in 2002, when I discovered their traditional blue and white cotton. Then in May 2003, the Hungarian Patchwork Association [www.hunpatch.com] held an International Exhibition of Quilts, made from the traditional blue-print/kekfesto cotton. Quilters from over 30 different countries contributed to the exhibition, but I was the only one from the U.K. who attended the Official Opening of the Exhibition.

One of the reasons for organising the event was to get the blueprint better known outside of Hungary. These quilts went on to be exhibited at the European Patchwork Show in Val d'Argent in France in September of that year.

The blue-print material is considered very ordinary in Hungary, as it used to be widely available. I liked it so much and felt that others would too, so the idea of setting up the website just fell into place.

The cotton is colour fast and fade resistant, and ideal for patchwork and quilting. There are only eight family run businesses left that produce the material in relatively small quantities, five of which I deal with on a regular basis.
